PIONEER, GENESSEE CC of ROCHESTER WIN TEAM TITLES AT Jr.CHESS OLYMPICS

Pioneer central won the gr.7-12 and Genessee Community Charter School of Rochester won the k-6 titles at the USA Jr. Chess Olympics held last Saturday at Pioneer Middle School, Yorkshire NY Niagara Falls finished a close second to GCC, missing the first place trophy by only 1 pt. after 5 rounds. Team members were Thomas Hahn, Alex Mieth, Felix Ling, and Jacob Bennett. Great job boys! Pioneer's K-6 team finished 3rd. Team members were Ryan Madden, Randall Beach, Austin Kossow, and Ryan and Nathan Palmisano. They were leading after 3 rounds but then the Rochester and NF boys took over. Good effort anyway. The next time you see Austin Kossow, ask him about the Fried Liver attack! It seems one of the Rochester boys pulled that on him and he lost in 7 moves! His parents assured me they would feed him liver and onions before the tournament next year so he wouldn't forget! Individual winners in k-6 were Daniel Johnston from Brighton with a perfect 5 of 5. Webster Kehoe from GCC with 4.5 finished second and Nolan Henrie from PS 17 of Rochester third. Other teams participating were Bradford PA, Brighton, and PS 17 of Buffalo represented by David Bradshaw who got 1.5 pts in only his second tournament! Good for you David! Pioneer easily won the 7-12 section as some conflicts made the other teams shorthanded. Team members were Tyler Smith, Morgan Beach, Robert Becker, and Wesley Darling. Tyler and Megesh Pansari of Brighton tied for first with 4.5 out of 5 with Megesh winning first after a 5 min blitz playoff. Morgan, Robert, and Dillon Smith of Scio tied for 3rd with Dillon winning the playoff. Other teams were Bradford PA and Casey MS, represented by Aaron Mcduffie. so a good time was had by all and we hope for a bigger and better turnout next year!

The Tales of the d2 pawn

I was asked to publish some of my games from recent tournament in Main Place Mall. Only my last game was in the style I am fond of. Game No. 2: (d2 pawn - going left became sort of hero in this game)13.Qe2 was a big mistake. I was supposed to move back with the B. - 13.Bd3. Now 13...f5 put white in a big trouble. Game No. 4: (just watch the d2 pawn - another hero - going right.)

Tim is back from Texas!

Our good friend Tim Rivers has returned from Texas as he is visiting family this week in Niagara Falls. He plans to come to Wegmans this Wednesday to play chess and catch up with old friends. Won't you come out and say hello and play a few quick games with him?

First Annual H. Mc Carthy Gipson Chess Grand Prix 2008

KLCC and The Archangel 8 Chess Academy are proud to announce the First Annual H. Mc Carthy Gipson Grand Prix Tournament. He is the first African American to become Buffalo Police Commissioner and he would like to join us in promoting the game of chess. A chess player himself, he wishes to address crime prevention, critical thinking skills, and character development, to our youth; for our seniors promote mind enrichment chess programs; and for our women address pregnacy prevention and the promotion of self esteem. Sardinia Results

Newcomer Nathan Braasch, an 8th grader from Derby NY, started his chess career with a bang this past Saturday by sweeping all eight games in the scholastic section of the Sardinia tournament. Although getting a scare from NYS 1st grade champ Felix Ling, Nathan survived and also defeated Thomas Hahn, Austin Kossow, and Ryan Madden in very competitive games. Other students playing were Ryan and Nathan Palmisano, Jacob Bennett, and Robert Becker.
