Miles A. James- an 8 year old third grader at Olmstead #64 School, and Urban Knights member, will be traveling to Albany, NY to compete in the New York State Chess Championships over this Labor Day weekend.
To help improve his chances, I'm hosting a Chess Workshop for him and any other scholastic players who would like to join him each day this week, Monday August 24th through Friday, August 28th at the Wegmans on Alberta Drive in Amherst, NY. The workshop runs from 12:30pm until 4:45pm.
Scholastic players who would like to improve, will be taught checkmating patterns, tactics, strategy, and chess principles. Also each player will be paired up for timed games of Game/30, in which games will be recorded to be later reviewed by a Chess Coach. The cost is $20 per student per day, but discounts will be given for additional family members. Chess sets, boards and clocks will be provided.

Also Labor Day, Sept 7 there will be a non-rated tournament at the Sardinia Town Park from 1-4pm. The park is located on Genesee Rd. between Rt 16 and Savage Rd. From Buffalo take Rt 400 south to Rt 16 to Genessee Rd,(turn right)to Park. There will be music and food, arts and crafts, even an old-timers baseball game. So if you have no plans for the day, come out and play some chess outside in beautiful Sardinia and help promote our game! No charge!

The Willie Hutch Jones Star Scholastic Section winners were Miles A James, Champion, and 2nd Place winner was Zachary M. Gerow.
In the Pulaski U1500 Section, The Gerow family continued their winning ways. First Place Michael R. Gerow, father of Zachary, 2nd Place - Glenn P. Conlin, and a three way tie for Third Place with Robert P. Gerow (GrandDad), James P. Davis and Steve L. Baer.
Upset Leaders were: Michael R. Gerow - 357 pts.,James P. Davis - 63 pts., Steve L. Baer - 53 pts, and Glenn P. Conlin - 50 pts.
The Grand Prix Section was named after Robert C. Johnson, Jamestown New York who passed away earlier this month. Mark Clark spoke a few heart felt words in his memory and then started everyones clock in Robert Johnson's memory. I have submitted his name to the Chess Federation so that his family knows that his dedication and contribution for the development of young chess players was greatly appreciated by all of us.
The Champion of the Robert C. Johnson Section was Harish Srinivasan(1765), Second Place had a four way tie, Mark Clark(2074) - Jamestown NY, Ryan Madden, Benjamin W Havey, and Matthew G. Peck.
Upset Leaders were: David S. Miller - 519 pts, Ryan Madden 391 pts, Matthew Peck 223 pts, Harish Srinivasan 154.5 pts and Albert Patterson 20.5 pts.
Missing from the top action were Vance Willliams, Eddie Mark, Barry Davis, Brian Hartman and Kenneth Regan. Our top players should continue to challenge us by playing in the tournaments.

With sadness, I post the following from an email I just received from Mark Clark of Jamestown. Our chess friend Bob Johnson has passed away.
"Everyone who's been to the Westfield or Jamestown Chess Clubs knows Bob Johnson as a fine friend and dedicated chess player and chess teacher. Bob was the kindest man I have met in a long while. He clearly loved the game of chess and wanted others to love it as much as he did. He was a team player, self-effacing, steady, and dependable, always ready to sacrifice his own needs to those of others. He would run to the task that others shied away from and do it with a light spirit and a sense of purpose. He always had the time to play a game of chess with a rank beginner, and to turn that game into a memorable chess lesson. In the short time I knew him, he left an indelible impression on me."

The Cafe La Verna [#17 on map] will be open throughout the day. There will be at least 30 minutes between rounds to grab a bite to eat.
Entry Fee: FREE! [players in the rated sections must be current USCF members or renew at the tournament] Please bring own chess set, board, and clock. None will be provided.

Time Control: G/90 or if you are using digital, G/85 with a 5 second delay. Pairings will be by Swiss format.

Please include full name, USCF ID number, rating [if you have one], section [Open, U1600, or Unrated], team you’re competing for, and your email address or phone number. There will be NO on site registration. Please register by email at least 2 days in advance.
Teams: The top team will be comprised of the top 5 scorers combined from the open and U1600 sections. At least one of the 5 scorers must be play in the open section. The unrated section will not count towards the top team. In case of a tie, there will be a head-to-head speed chess playoff.

Tom Warner won the Sardinia tournament last Saturday, defeating Ryan Madden, Pat Patterson, and Harish Srinivasan in three very competitive games. Pat and Harish both allowed rook skewers after being ahead in material but low on time. This was the first tournament held with the G/60 format. >
In the other games, 13 year old Ryan Madden beat Pat Patterson, Harish beat Ryan Madden, and Patterson beat Harish, which shows how competitive this tournament was. >
In the Scholastic section Sam Tillinghast beat out Austin Will and Andrew Joslyn for the trophy. >
