Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada Open

The annual Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada Open will once again be at the Shriner's Club this weekend. There is an entry fee ($45 Canadian) and you must be or become a member of the Canadian Chess Federation (presently $36 Canadian/year) to participate, but it is a well run event and worth the trip and expense. I have been late to post this. I obtained only 3.0/5.0 and I lost 14 rating points from 1784 to 1770. Not the best tourney for me, but certainly a lot to learn from. Many of you may not be aware of this wonderful online tool to search for chess events around the region, state and nation. It is available at http://www.uschess.org/directories/tnmtsearch/

This is the tool that alerted me to a number of recently scheduled events in our area including the one I just posted below.

Not only can you do a search by type of tournament, cost, prize fund, distance to where you live, ect., it also can send you email alerts for recently added events, many of which are not published in the Chess Life TLA section.

Spring Scio Scholastic Rescheduled

I just received the following email from the "old woodpusher"

SCHOLASTIC CHESS TOURNAMENT #8 SCIO HIGH SCHOOL SCIO, NEW YORK MAY 10, 2008 Hello, Scholastic Chess Club Advisers! Just a short blurb to keep the upcoming chess event fresh in the minds of all our supporting cast! The tournament playing area will be located in the Scio High School cafeteria. Follow the directional signs once inside the building. Remember to have those students wishing to have lunch pay the $4.00 fee at the tournament registration desk when checking in. Accompanying adults can also pay the fee if they expect to join in on the lunch break. (Sub’s this time!)

The schedule is tentatively as follows: 9:00 – 9:30 Student check in and registration. 10:00 Start of Round-1 play 11:10 Start of Round-2 play 12:10 Lunch break 12:45 Start of Round-3 play 1:55 Start of Round-4 play 3:00 Start of Round-5 play 4:15 Awards presentation (If above holds true!) Remember that pre-registration of students allows for a smoother and timely event. Make every effort to have all your players that anticipate on attending this tournament pre-registered, if possible by MAY 7TH so the organizational functions can be attended to by the tourn. director. Student name, school and grade level will suffice for registration purposes. This can be e-mailed to garrylreynolds@rocketmail.com Late registration holds up the first round pairings so we will set a policy of no registrations after 9:45am! Please have your students on deck prior to 9:45am. Rounds may start earlier than scheduled if all games are completed ahead of schedule. The first two rounds of play generally move along much faster than scheduled.

The host for this event will be Karen Insley, the chess coach/mentor for the Scio Scholastic Chess Club. We extend our appreciation to her for hosting our second tournament in the new school year. Matt J. Parry is NYS High School Champion

NM Matt J. Parry, 17, of Rochester is the 2008 NYS High School Champion and will represent the Empire State in the Denker Tournament of High School Champions this Spring. He won the title by going a perfect 6/6 at the NYS Scholastic Championship in Saratoga Springs this past weekend. Many of you recognize and maybe even played against this excellent young man either at the Rochester Chess Center or at one of the regional Grand Prix Events. His rating is currently 2329.

Instead of merely defending his first grade title by playing in the K-1 section, Amherst first grader, FELIX (YUANFEI) LING, chose to play up in the very strong Primary section this weekend at the NYS Scholastic Championships. This section included players older than him and the top player, William Graiff, was rated 1668! He finished 3.5/6 earning him a tie for 16th place overall (19th on tiebreaks) in the state among Primary School players. His wins included over players rated 1180 and 1248 and he drew a 1388 Canadian player.

Facing such competition should prepare him well for the US Elementary Championships in Pittsburgh this May. His pre-tournament rating of 1012 increased to 1081 which would be good, according to the February rating list, for 35th in the country among 7 year olds. Way to go Felix!
