Katz wins in Sardinia

Alanna Katz (1850) gave the boys a lesson last Saturday in Sardinia, defeating the chess ambassador Mike Mcduffie, veteran John Mauer, and Pat Patterson to win the 3 round swiss event. Great job Alanna!

This tournament saw the return of John Mauer (2044), who was once a near master and Jamestown City Champion,and who played for many years at the Queen City chess club. Mauer, Don Hoak (1799), and Patterson (1690) tied for 2nd-4th. Mcduffie, Austin Kossow, Ryan and Nathan Palmisano, and Carl Raymore all tied for the u1500 prize.

In the scholastic section we had a good turnout with 11 entries! Pioneer Middle school 5th grader Chris Darling went 9-0 to win 1st. Its time for this kid to move up! John Osborne, Sam Tillinghast, and newcomer Francis Kilcoyne from Hornell tied for 2nd with 7.5. Also competing were Mike Pinzel,Bob Mahiques,Todd Thompson,Zach Madden,Nick Brennan,Brandan LaMont, and Wesley Darling.

East High School Chess Club Forms


Guest speaker Dr. James J. Paul, a USCF member, is seen giving tips to some of the new members of The East High School Chess Club-Maynard Vanever (10th grader), Joshua Hampton (10th grader), William Green, Jr. (12th grader), and James Hampton (10th grader)

This is to announce a new after school chess club at East High School in Buffalo, New York. The program is directed by Michael A. Mc Duffie, certified Chess Coach. The team meets every Monday and Tuesday for one hour afterschool.

URBAN QUEENS CHESS CLUB


On Wednesday, February 3rd, The Urban Queens Chess Club had its initial meeting. The Urban Queens Chess Club is a program to help identify and promote young girls and females of all ages, learn how to play chess, chess tactics and strategies. The group will meet at the Frank E Merriweather Jr Branch Library every wednesday from 6pm until 7:45pm.

Results from January Quads


  • 23 Players participated in the January Quads held on January 3o.
  • Robert Cousins (2180) took first place in Quad #1 with 2 1/2 out of 3 , defeating Barry Davis (2117), Tom Warner (1803) and drawing Alanna Katz (1859).
  • In Quad #2 Ryan Madden continued his success winning 3 of 3.
  • Quad #3 saw a tie between Mike Dupere and Daniel John Schieber with 2 points each.
  • Quad #4 also saw 2 players tie for first Sean Ian Jones and Chris Darling shared the honors.
  • The January round robin was won by Wes Darling with a 6-0 score !
  • Thank you to all that supported this event and thank you for the patience shown by those that endured the security guard fiasco at E.O.C. The remaining events scheduled at E.O.C. have been cancelled. My sincerest apologies for any inconvience.

Here is a position from the last weekend tournament game. I spent about 10 min. contemplating Nxe6 and decided against it and after thinking a lot played f3.
What do you think, is Nxe6 playable in the current position ?

JERRY ECKMAN MEMORIAL GRAND PRIX REPORT 2010



A record attendance for the first chess outing for the new year 2010. There was 43 total chess players, a record number in the Scholatic Stars Section of 15 players. Not shown in Eckman Stars were Janae N. Baker and Delmar M. Green. The final results had Champion Trevor D. Cohn, 6th grader, Kenmore Middle School who won his second title in two months, 2nd Place was Matthew T. Leahy, Sophomore at Bishop Timon, 3rd Place Miles A. James, Olmstead #64 and Urban Knights Chess Club, and 4th Place Sean V. Mc Donough, 6th grader at Kenmore Middle. New USCF members were Janae N. Baker, Cameron Davis, Delmar M. Green, Matthew T. Leahy and Jordan C. Duell.

A total of sixteen chess players participated in the Martin Luther King Jr. U1500 Section. The Upset Leaders were Barrett Furton of Rochester NY with 624 points, David Gluchowski with 241.5 pts, James Harris with 218.5 pts, James P. Davis 118 pts, Vic Bahl - 58 pts, Scott Wilson - 37.5 pts, and Joe Covley 16 pts.

The Champion was Joe Covley a Senior from Bishop Timon, 2nd Place tie was James P. Davis, Esq. and Steve L. Baer. A special thanks to Coach Bowers and Coach Warner for making it possible for their chess teams to compete against each other outside of their school schedules.

In the "Remember Haiti" Open Section had twelve players, USCF ratings ranged from 1183 to 2416. Our first female open player was Alanna Katz, rated 1859 from New York City, a student at the University of Buffalo, played in the World Team tournament last year in New Jersey.

The 2010 Champion was Kenneth W. Regan Ph.D, International Master and Professor at the University of Buffalo went undefeated 4 - 0. Dr Regan made a donation to the Haitian Relief fund at American Red Cross, Buffalo Chapter in the name of the Archagel 8 Chess Academy. Second Place went to Marijan Procyk and U1900 winner was Ryan Madden, Pioneer Chess Team. Upset Leaders were Benjamin W. Havey(1727) who defeated Barry Davis(2101) in the 1st round for a total of 456 pts, Erik Lubas with 418.5 pts, Ryan Madden 138.5 pts, David S. Miller 132.5 pts and Meghesh Pansari from Rochester NY with 10 pts.

Our next Grand Prix tournament will be on saturday, February 13th, 2010, Four Rounds, Swiss, Game 50, No Scholastic Section since they will be at the Global Concepts Charter tournament, Two Sections will be Open and U1500, Advance entries of $20 vs $35 Cash only at the door, always welcomed no later than wednesday, February 10, 2010, mail and make checks payable to Archangel 8 Chess Academy, 60F Guilford Lane, Buffalo New York 14221.

Lastly, Robert Simpson, Esq of Simpson and Simpson donated a contribution towards the Pizza, beverages, a 4"Chess set and Wooden Chess board to the Archangel 8 Chess Academy, Dr. James J Paul donated the chocoalate candy desserts and Lorena James(sister of Miles), Mrs. Pencille (Chess Mom of Andrew)and Mrs. Cummings(Chess Mom of Miles) for their "Catering Services" of Pizza.
