Our New First Grade Champion!

After becoming the New York State 1st grade champion, does Felix now have his sites on the entire USA?
Success in Saratoga!
Our hero.
Rev. Marijian Procyk, chess mentor, and Dr. Mark Mieth, his humble driver,
with Felix Ling NYS 1st Grade Champion 2007
FELIX (YUANFEI) LING , who recently turned 7, entered his first USCF rated tournament-The New York State K-8 Championships- this weekend in Saratoga Springs, NY and he came home with a trophy as big as he is! (Quite frankly, it was so big,it was hard to get into the SUV he was riding in.) He scored 4/7 in the combined first and second grade section which tied him for third overall in that section. He, however, was the top first grader in the state on tie breaks. His provisional rating is now 799. I am certain that that number will quickly climb and he will accumulate many more awards in the near future.
Other notable side lights from ths weekend are:
REV. MARIJAN PROCYK having the opportunity to play 3 FIDE titled players in the Empire State Open and finishing a very respectable 3/6 in the Open section and increasing his rating closer to the master level. He also found a new Chinese Buffet restaurant that he likes, but, alas, no mango pudding.
The only other WNY local scholastic player, THOMAS HAHN, from Stella Niagara Education Park, performing admirably in the challenging 5th grade section with a 3/7 score. (The top player in that section is rated 1800+)

Merry Christmas to all!

I just wished to take this opportunity to wish one and all a very
Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year!
From "the chessdoctor"
PS: I will not be able to be at the regular Wegmans Wednesday chess session tomorrow 12/26/07.

Scenes from SCIO

One of the 12 happy students from Scio
The winners of the K-6 section Justin Wedge, Mason Windus, and Z Wang Advanced Winner Holden Bernstein with Tournament Director Garry Reynolds Cody Hennard, 2nd place Advanced with "the old woodpusher" Third Place Advanced Nico Alvarado
Fourth in Advanced
Dillon Smith
I just was sent some pictures from the unrated scholastic tournament that was held in the Southern Tier on Saturday, December 1st. So it's time to do the report of the Scio Unrated Chess Tournament.
I can attest that it was a very well attended and run event- It was well worth the drive. Mr. Garry Reynolds "the old woodpusher" has been putting on these events twice a year. This event also was aided by Ms. Karen Insley the director of the Scio Central Chess Club. Both did a marvelous job.
A total of 44 students from Western New York and Pennslyvania participated. They ranged from 1st to 12th grade.
The winners in the K-6 section were: 1st Justin Wedge a sixth grader from Bradford, PA, 2nd Mason Windus a 6th grader from Scio, NY, 3rd "Z" Wang a 6th grader from Olean, NY.
The winner of the Advanced section (7-12) was Holden Bernstein an 11th grader from Olean who had a perfect 5-0 score. There was a 4 way tie for 2nd between Cody Hennard (4th grader from Bradford, PA), Nico Alvarado (7th grader from Bradford, PA), Dillon Smith (7th grader from Scio, NY), and Rory Burke (11th grader from Canisteo-Greenwood, NY). On tiebreaks as determined by performance score, 2nd went to Hennard, third to Alvarado, and 4th to Smith.
The buzz of the tournament, however, may have been the play of Felix Ling, a first grader from Amherst who played in the Advanced section and had a +2-3 score as he beat first an eleventh grader then a 12 th grader in rounds 1 and 2. His loss in round 3 was to another 11th grader- the tournament winner, and had had a winning position but missed going up a whole rook and instead traded queens. In round 4 he lost a hard fought game to another 11th grader. Such play earned him the nickname "The Little Asian Tiger." Perhaps if he continues to apply himself, he just might become a Tiger Woods-like prodigy on the chess board.

KLCC BUFFALO OPEN GRAND PRIX RESULTS

Private David Evans, Jr.
Died May 23, 2003
During Iraqi Operation Freedom
Here are the results from the Kellogg Leadership for Community Change Buffalo Open Grand Prix Tournament. Total attendance was 39 players, a new high for the year. The Kellogg LCC Tournament was dedicated to one of Buffalo's soldiers who died in Iraq, a Kensington HS graduate David Evans, Jr. For more information about the local hero can be found at http://www.militarycity.com/valor/256662.html
New York State Senator Antoine M. Thompson stopped by and took photos with some of the winners and the players. Senator Thompson is currently working with the family members to raise money for the David Evans, Jr. Scholarship Fund as well as to increase awareness of the benefits of chess.
Contributions for this worthy cause were accepted by his father, David Evans, Sr. Each person who donated to the fund were given a Blockbuster raffle ticket. The WINNING TICKET was #740217. The winner should contact me for their prize. Results from the David Evans, Jr. Memorial Section were as follows: 1st Place and undefeated (5-0), for his 3rd tournament this year - Aaron Mc Duffie; 2nd Place went to Kingman Bassett III, and 3rd Place & Top Female was Bethany Cates. Top upsets were Bridget Smith defeating Julius Spencer (529) for a total of 214 points in Round 3 and Victoria Stauffiger also defeating Julius Spencer for a total of 159 Points in Round 5. In the Mayor Byron W. Brown Section (Grades K-3), 1st Place and Undefeated for his second tournament this year (4-0-1) - Trevor Cohn; 2nd Frankie Rodriguez, and 3rd Shannon Smith. Top upset was Samantha Rodriguez defeating brother Frankie in a disparity of 537 points! This occurred after she got mad when he captured her queen. The message is: "Don't Mess With Samantha's Queen!"
The Kellogg Grand Prix Section had a tie for 1st Place between NM Lionel L. Davis and Rev. Marijan Procyk. 3rd Place was also a tie this time between three players- David "Pawn Master" Mc Duffie (Baltimore, MD), Luka Glinsky (Erie, Pa) and Mark Clark (Bemus Point, NY). Thomas Warner captured the most upset points (294) in Round 3, when he defeated 13 year old Aquino Inigo (2041), a new Canadian visitor. It was in that same round where Marijan Procyk drew with National Master Lionel L Davis (rating difference of 143), Vince Woodard drew Mark Clark (difference of 201). While in Round 2, David "Pawn Master" Mc Duffie defeated Mark Clark with a differential of 211 points. I also would want to welcome the other Canadian and first time visitor Michael Prysiazyny (1772). The Senator Antoine M Thompson Section was once again won by Evan Ashton with an undefeated 4-0 score. Evan hasn't been defeated since winning the Mayors Cup back in June 2007. Evan had his picture taken with Senator Thompson. A four way tie for 2nd Place took place with a new player Jerome Barton, along with John Campbell, David Biddle and William Rich. Adam Schunk had the largest upset point when he defeated Steven Baer who was rated 440 higher than him. Other noteable surprise results were William Rich defeating Dr. James Paul (192 point difference) and then also over Chess Gear Vendor Sophia L Lewis (237 difference), Phillip Laugeman besting David Biddle (403 point seperation), and Lee Smith had an upset win over Sophia L Lewis (a 234 point disparity). Sophia, however, was the Top Female for the November Grand Prix. New chess players were Michael Gerow and Jerome Barton. The next tournament will be THE BLIZZARD CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS! 5 Rounds, Game 45 & 60, SWISS, Saturday, December 29th, 2007. Sections are Open, U1600, U1400 and U1200. Main Place Mall December Tournament

On this past Saturday, December 8, there was a tournament in Main Place Mall in Buffalo organized by Michael Mc Duffie "the Chess Ambassador".
Master Lionel Davis and yours truly shared 1-2 place. Here are some positions from my games:
1. 1:0. M.P.-Michael Prysiazyny Black played in this position 17. …Nd3. How good or bad was that move? Game finished in 11 more moves. 2. 0:1. Aquini Inigo-M.P. Black is pawn up but he is to lose the a-pawn in next move. What should black play? 3. draw. M.P.-Lionel Davis After 26.Nd3 Qf6 Black offered draw. He was low on time. Was I justified to accept it? 4. 0:1. Tom Warner-M.P. After 19...Nd5 20.Bd2 what move would you play? Evan Ashton won all four of his games in the Under 1600 Section. Congratulations!
A full report likely will be provided by Mr. Mc Duffie in the near future.

Marijan's Move in "All of WNY is out to get Marijan!"

VS
It has been 11 months of our experiment in which we were playing two simultaneous correspondence games, one as white one as black, against the right good Reverend Marijan Procyk. Our moves have been the most popular choice of our readership. Each reader can nominate moves and can use any outside assistance to derive the move-except for the use of a computer engine. Meanwhile Marijan is not allowed to look at the comments. Rather he will email his moves, after I update these boards. Marijan has won the game in which we had tried a King's Indian Defense against a 4 pawn's attack. It's Marijan's move in the remaining Caro Kann variation game. AQE NOVEMBER BUFFALO GRAND PRIX RESULTS

36 chess players came out to the tournament this past Saturday. One special guest was Felix Yuanfei Ling from Guangdong, China. His only loss was to Malik by means of a scholar's mate! A mating pattern, I doubt, he will ever lose to again. Pattern Recognition

Harish had asked that I post this online game of mine. The background story is that at a prior Wegmans Wednesday he had defeated me with a similar "trap" in which he gave up his bishop in order to open up the rook file in front of my castled king. His queen came out to that file and checkmate was unavoidable. To show you that it is not just young Felix who quickly can remember patterns in chess, I offer you this game. Note that after 12...Qh5 the game is over. White has no way of stopping checkmate, he kindly allowed the checkmate, however, and then swore at me in some Slavic language.

BRAINS AND BRAWN

Melvin Fowler v. Jim Brown
Bills center Melvin Fowler #67 is widely regarded as the best chess player on Buffalo's roster. And while most of his teammates don't devote the same amount of time to the game as he does, they might be a bit more respectful of his talents on the board if they knew the name of his top playing partner.
Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown is Fowler's most ardent adversary when it comes to the game of chess. The two met during Fowler's second year with the Cleveland Browns where Brown was still a consultant to the club.
"That's how we got to start playing each other," said Fowler. "Our friendship kind of developed around the board.
You can read the whole article here: http://www.buffalobills.com/news/news.jsp?news_id=5397
Best wishes to Mr. Fowler over the board and on the gridiron. LET'S GO BUFFALO!!!

Meeting of the Minds!

Question: Who will win when IM Dr. Ken Regan and IM Dr. Danny Kopec face each other this Friday evening at the Niagara Falls Conference Center from 6-10 PM as part of the Niagara Falls Chess Festival and Second Annual Jeff White Memorial-Excelsior Open this weekend?
Answer: We all will! This chess exhibition/symposium "How to Think Like a Chess Master" will be a rare opportunity to see and hear how an Internation Master of chess approaches and plays a chess game. It will include a Game/60 match in which each of these two outstanding players will be in separate rooms in which they will speak out loud each's thought processes in analyzing the position and how each derived the next move. At the conclusion of the game we all will convene in a great hall and have the opportunity to ask them anything we wish. Wow what an opportunity to learn from some of the best in chess!
Attendence to this event is included in your entry fee to the tournament. There is still time to take advantage of the $10 discount on preregistration and the ability to then attend the Friday night chess exhibition/symposium. Just publish your name in the comment section with your USCF # and regular rating by Wednesday 10/10/07 before 11:59:59 PM.
If you can not play in this weekend's tournament, but would like to come just to this exhibition/match/ symposium I would just ask that you make at least a $5 donation to the Education Fund of the children of Jeff White.

Who's Name Will Be Engraved Next ?!

Felix, The Jeff White Memorial Cup, and Partho The Dolan Girls: Molly, Callie, and Rael taking their turn posing with the trophy
In 2006 GM Jaan Ehlvest was the innaguaral Jeff White Memorial Chess Champion. Who will be it the winner this upcoming weekend? Another titled player such as IM Ken Regan (or IM Kopec if we can convince him to play in the tournament), a local expert such as Procyk, or Glinsky?
Perhaps it will be someone who has yet to preregister. There is still time to do so. Just publish your name in the comment section with your USCF # and regular rating and you can take advantage of the preregistraion $10 discount and the Friday night chess exhibition/symposium "How to Think Like a Chess Master" being given by IMs Kopec and Regan.
Although, these aspiring young people pictured above may not get his or her name on the trophy this year. In coming year's who knows? Personally I would not be at all surprised to see anyone of them succeed in chess.

Interesting Endgame

White to move. The only way white can win is to trap the knight and win the knight and promote the pawn. Can it be done? My trainer GM Petr Kiriakov gave me this problem and I was allowed to move pieces to solve this. So you could try the same.

The New World Champion

Vishy Anand of India has captured his second World Championship and is the undisputed World Chess Champion. Barring any further FIDE shenanigans he will defend his regained title in a head to head match with Vladimir Kramnik next year. The next challengers/candidate series will began next year and the winner of that is to face Topalov in a head to head match. The Topalov-Candidate Match winner will then face the Anand-Kramnik Winner. Sounds simple doesn't it?

12th Arkport Open-Marijan's Games

It was good to play in 12th Arkport this past Saturday, September 22. Thank you, Harish, for driving David and me. Final result for me was fine, although I hoped to play at least 2 games with higher rated players, but in order to do that you need to win each game.
The full cross table for the tournament is at http://main.uschess.org/component/option,com_wrapper/Itemid,201/ and then type in 12th Arkport
I managed to win first one. Play with pawns at the end was nice. Worl - Procyk
Second game was a draw against Shao, who is fast improving. He was pawn up, after inaccuracies in my opening play, but I fought hard to secure draw, which you can see from the following game. Wrong color Bishop and a-Pawn up is a theoretical draw. I was putting of to learn Nimzo-Indian (mainly I tried to avoid it), but now I need to do something about that. Procyk - Shao
Third game was a strange one. I played against 1200+, but I had feeling he was much stronger. He made big mistake in 10th move, loosing a piece, so all was over in 13. Zhow - Procyk The best game was my last game with Craig A La Salle (2141) who is a fine player from Rochester. I only used about half an hour in this game because I had played a similar game on line just a few days ago. By transposition we reached the same position after 17 moves as I had had in the on line game. It was pure chance that I got to play it again in Arkport. Although the 18th move went differently, it did not matter as white was in command by then anyways. We can first look at the on line game. Procyk - Ichibanov And now let us look at game from Arkport which brought me a share of 1st place. Procyk - La Salle If you have any question about some particular move in these games against La Salle or Ichibanov, I can probably provide an answer. La Salle asked me after the game where he went wrong, and Ichibanov wrote: "Did I miss any way out after 17 d6? I looked long and hard but failed to find a successful defense." Possibly it was all over at that point. What do you think?

My Games at Arkport Open

It was very nice tournament at Arkport with 35 players. Congrats to Marijan who won the tourney with 3.5/5 and to Bob Shao and Tom Warner who shared the U1800 class prize with 2.5/4. Also to David Biddle who tied first for U1600 class prize. It will be good to see their games as well. For me, although I only obtained only 2/4, I was glad I played 3 players who were atleast 200 above my rating and I managed to win one of them(although I was lucky after a piece blunder). The two games that I lost were very interesting games where I fought hard but did not manage to hold. According to my calculations my rating should go up a little. My first game was an easy win, nothing much interesting. I am posting my games from round 2,3 and 4. Round 2 Harish Srinivasan vs Robert Feldstein Round 3 Dygert vs Harish Srinivasan Round 4 Harish Srinivasan vs James Hiltunen
