Hey everyone, UB will be hosting a Round Robin 5 0 Bughouse Tournament April 29th, 145 B Student Union (UB North Campus) with registration going from 9:45-11:00. It will be $20/team to enter. Come down and have some fun! Thanks so much for the support! (We will have a break for lunch and there is great food available on site!)

2012 ARMED FORCES DAY MEMORIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Hosted by The Archangel 8 Chess Academy and Buffalo Fire Commissioner, Garnell W. Whitfield, Jr. Celebrating 12 years of Educational, Enrichment Youth Chess programs as an affiliate of the US Chess Federation, the governing body of Chess in the United States of America.

This CHAMPIONSHIP will be in memory of Army Private David Evans, Jr., graduate of the Buffalo School District and former intern in the Masten District Council Office during the term of Councilman Antoine M. Thompson, showed the value of community involment and the importance of following your dreams.

In June 2011, the David Evans, Jr. Courage Scholarship Awards Ceremony held at the Frank Merriweather Jr. Library in Buffalo, NY awarded scholarships to the following students; Crystal Prince - Graduate of Hutchinson Technical, Bria Thompson - Graduate of South Park, Kelly Tian - Graduate of City Honors, Holly Granat - Graduate of Niagara Falls, Miranda Papp - Graduate of Tonawanda, Ashley Brown - Graduate of City Honors, Christopher Munn - Graduate of Maritime Charter and Tela Bridges - Graduate of Maritime Charter.

The Private David Evans, Jr. Championships will be held at the Main Place Mall, located at 390 Main St, Buffalo, NY, on Saturday, May 19, 2012. There is FREE parking under the Mall.

PIZZA and TROPHIES are SPONSORED by Old First Ward Community Center, Simpson & Simpson, PLLC and Willie Hutch Jones Educational and Sports Clinics.

There will be four Championship sections, URBAN QUEENS - ALL Girls Only, OPEN, U1500 and USCF Scholastic K-12.

Advance entries fee will be $15 for all players, online registrations must be received by midnight on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 with full name, USCF number, Section and Telephone, please mail and make checks payable to Archangel 8 Chess Academy, 60F Guilford Lane, Buffalo, NY 14221.

BISHOP TIMON TAKES 24TH PLACE AT NATIONALS!

The final results are in from the 2012 USCF National High School Scholastic U1200 Team Championships held in Minneaoplis, MN where the Bishop Timon Chess Team wins 24th Place out of 63 teams with 338 players in the section.

The Bishop Timon team headed by Coach Bowers, travelled with a six man team, members were Tim Keane(738), finished 117/338 players with 4 pts, Seii Kojo(951), finished 159 with 3.5 pts, Joshua Benham(963),finished 193 with 3.0 pts, Matthew Leahy(1147), finished 205 with 3 pts, Matthew Rzeznik(1104), finished 207 with 3 pts, and Kyle Kostek(1170), finished246 with 3 pts.

The K-12 National High School U1200 Undefeated 2012 Champion was Kaustubh Sanjay Nimkar, 9th grader, USCF rated 1111, from Lawrence, Kansas!

Results - SPRING OPEN - GAME 60

Twenty five players, four sections and big upsets brought exciting chess for the April Spring Open USCF Tournament held in the Main Place Mall, Buffalo, NY.

In the Scholastic K-12 "Bon Voyage" - Bishop Timon USCF Section hosted eight players. We want to "WELCOME", Rachel Norvilitis, 4th grader, Orchard Park, NY and student of Mladen Vucic, International Master. Also "WELCOME" to Jakaye Bunton, 2nd grader, Buffalo, NY. Jakaye is a member of the Urban Queens & Knights Chess Club, directed by The Archangel 8 Chess Academy. Both completed their first chess tournament.

The Spring Open Game 60, Undefeated Champion was Benjamin J. Rummell, member of the Chess Club of Buffalo. Benjamin earned the Championship title by defeating James W. Lyon, the 2012 NY State Middle School Reserve Champion. In March 2012, James was undefeated and gave Benjamin his second loss at the NY State Scholastic Chess Championships held in Saratoga Springs NY.

TOP FEMALE Trophy winner was Dekayla S. Dubose, earned her award by defeating Samuel E. Santora, Master Mind Chess League - HomeSchool Chess Team. Dekayla is a new member of the Urban Queens & Knights Chess Club and she has been working on her chess game with (Dad), Douglas Dubose and NM Barry Davis.

Kudos for James and Sam who played in both the Scholastic and U1500 Sections and had their work cut out for them. I admired their hard work, dedication and effort for their tournament play. Tied for Third place were James W. Lyon, St Peter and Paul School, Hamburg, NY and Ashton A. William, first grader at Heim Elementary, member of the Stars of India Chess Club and has plans to participate in the 2012 USCF National Scholastic K-1 Championships held in Nashville, TN in May. The Fifth Place Medal winner was Samuel E. Santora.

Participation Medals were awarded to Jakaye Bunton, Rachel Norvilitis, Alexis J. Schlaak, Matthew C. Schlaak and James Shippens, who played in the Unrated Section.

Upset Leaders were Dekayla S. Dubose - 660 pts, James W. Lyon - 240 pts and Benjamin J. Rummell - 155 pts. Dekayla(580) defeated Samuel E. Santora(1240), James(1000) defeated Samuel E. Santora(1240) and Benjamin(845) defeated James(1000).

In the Spring Open - U1500 Champion was Glenn P. Conlin, 2nd Place Tie was Percy Barbour, member of the Sunday Fables Chess Club and Steve L. Baer, member of the Gloria J. Parks Chess Club.

U1500 Upset Leaders were; Percy Barbour - 64.5 pts and Michael Skok - 42 pts. Percy(1317p) draws Glenn Conlin(1446) and Michael Skok(1233) draws Percy Barbour(1317p).

There is a NEW Spring Open Section Undefeated Champion - Owen E. Miller, member of the Urban Queens and Knights Chess Club and Sunday Fables Chess Club, who defeated visiting from Jamestown, NY - Mark J. Clark(2016), 2nd Place - Tamas Gemes, Urban Queens & Knights Chess Club and 3rd Place Tie was Kevin N. Roulhac, Urban Queens & Knights Chess Club and Mark J. Clark.

Upset Leaders were Tamas Gemes - 252 pts, Owen E. Miller - 180 pts, Kevin N. Roulhac - 179 pts and Emory Parish - 23 pts. Tamas(1439) defeated David S. Miller(1637), Owen(1836) defeated Mark J. Clark(2016), Kevin N. Roulhac(1530) defeated David S. Miller(1637) and Emory(1547) defeated Lucas A. Seybold(1570) visiting from Fredonia, NY.

Bishop Timon Chess Team is currently playing in the 2012 USCF National Scholastick K-12 Championships in Minneapolis, MN. GOOD LUCK from all of us here in Buffalo - Niagara Falls Community Chess organization.

UB SPRING COLLEGIATE CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2012

Its official, the University of Buffalo held its first official Chess Club Spring Chess Championships in the Student Union on Tuesday, April 3, 2012. The UB Chess Club is an official recognized Chess Club in its first year of funding by the UB Student Association. Chess sets, chess boards and a few digital chess clock were provided for the tournament.

Stephen Dygert and Matt Parry tied for first place. The club tournament committee members Mark, Scott and Ruba met briefly and decided to break the tie with a five minute blitz game. CONGRATULATIONS to STEPHEN DYGERT, from the Rochester Chess Club and the first official 2012 Collegiate Chess Champion and winner of a Premium Chess set and board.

Twenty two players turned out for its first handicapped, four games, G/15 Collegiate Chess Championship. Local USCF notable players participating were Sam Copeland - 2100, National Master Barry Davis - 2208, Rochester Chess Club members - Stephen Dygert - 2130 and National Master Matt Parry 2260, UB President Scott Zdunczyk - 1400, Mark Johnson - 1850 and Sandipan Kundu - 1400.

Kalfas, Dunsworth tie at Sardinia

Sardinia played the perfect host saturday as out of towners won all the prizes in the 4 round open. Veteran Dick Kalfas of Jamestown defeated Ryan Madden in round four to tie for 1st with Ray Dunsworth of Erie, Pa, each with 3.5/4. Ray's son Josh, with 3pts, won the u1500 prize and Ray's other son Chris, also with 3pts, won the u1200. Well done Dunsworth family!

Other players were Pat Patterson, Nathan Palmisano, Chris and Wes Darling, Austin Kossow, Lucas Grisanti, Max Peters, Todd Thompson, and Zach Madden.

Zach Madden won the Scholastic section with 3pts over Max Peters, Wes Darling, Todd Thompson, and Lucas Grisanti.
