Welcome to the BRONZE Age!

Well that is more like it. Both the men's and women's teams from the USA finished third in this year's Chess Olympiad. A fantastic accomplishment indeed. I hope this continues to inspire the chess players in the US to continue to compete at a high level. Hopefully it will also cause more in this country to take notice and thus increase the interest (and sponsorship money) to chess.
Now if GM Gata Kamsky-USA's Board One were to beat Topalov in the World Championship semifinals, wow what a thing that would be!

  3. "The US teams did it in honor of the new President-Elect Barack Obama, whom (Italian premier) Silvio Berlusconi described as `bronzed'."

I actually cut Berlusconi a little slack for his notorious remark because in Italian it can also mean "cast in bronze", i.e. idol-worshiped. Though in-context that's not included in what Berlusconi meant.

However, there is a real chance the US men's team could lose its bronze as a knock-on effect of Ivanchuk's doping-test dissing. I credit ChessBase with a good treatment of the issues here.
