yeah i recall Fenster and i engaging in a bit of chess back in the 80s,great player, great fun , Peace.
ReplyDeleteI played against him way back when. He was a very strong player and a classy person, Don Gregory
ReplyDeleteI played last board on a team with Alan back in the 80's in a WNY Chess League. The team had Wayne Gradl on first board. I remember Alan as having a very friendly demeanor. If my memory serves me, he played in a simul against young Gata Kamsky held at Canisius College. I could be wrong, but he may have been one of the players who either beat or drew with Kamsky. I wonder if there is anybody around who could recollect. Somewhere among my belongings I have a VHS tape of that event.

How nice of all of you to remember Alan. I didn't know him back in his playing days...but it's great to hear what he was like back then.
ReplyDeleteI'm his wife, Susan, and just to set the record straight (-:, he was the first to beat Kamsky at that simul (I was there for that). He was very proud, and I still have a copy of the Buffalo News article memorializing the event, as well as the score sheet :)
Thanks for the feedback....Susan Fenster
I too remember Alan as a great chess player and a real mensch, from back in the 70s at UB. I was sad to hear of his passing.
