PAWNMASTER CHALLENGE MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT 2013

Hosted by The Lyon Family, Glenn Conlin, Buffalo Fire Commissioner Garnell W. Whitfield Jr and The Archangel 8 Chess Academy to celebrate the memory of David W. Mc Duffie, also known as The Pawnmaster, who died in Baltimore Maryland in August 2012.

The 2013 PawnMaster Challenge Tournament will be a 3 to 4 games, Quad format if possible, USCF Dual rated, Game 50;d5 with two 30 minute classroom sessions from current scoresheets.

Saturday, January 26, 2013, Main Place Mall, Upper Level, 390 Main Street, Buffalo, New York. Free Parking under the Mall, please protect your valuables! Food Court is open during tournament play!

This concept was designed with the assistance of National Master Lionel L. Davis and National Master Barry Davis, to help give chess opening principles, chess tactics and chess strategies for chess players who want to improve and prepare for the upcoming NY State Scholastic Chess Championships in Feb 2013, The Marchand Open in Rochester NY in March 2013, USCF Supernational V Scholastic K-12 Championships in April in Nashville TN and the Buffalo Open Chess Championships "2013 Mayors Cup" in June.

All players are to bring their chess set, chess board and digital chess clock, report by 9:00am, games start at 9:30am and must register online to KNIGHTSOF64@yahoo.com by midnight on Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, with full name, USCF number and telephone.

Entry fee is $20, USD Cash, to be paid at the door. A portion of the entry fee will be for awards, uscf rating fees and paid to National Masters Lionel L. Davis and Barry Davis, who will hold 2 review classes each.

We will do our best to divide players in quads with similar ratings to keep it competitive for all.

RESULTS -William J O'Leary Memorial 2013


The O'Leary - Soudant Family and The Archangel 8 Chess Academy would like to thank everyone who came out to support this second annual 2013 USCF Chess event in Buffalo New York. A total of 29 paid players participate in three sections.

Highlights were a new attendace record for 2013 with 6 female scholastic players where Dakayla Dubose was the Undefeated Scholastic K-12 Champion out of 12 total players. Congratulations Dakayla!

Upsets were the highlights of the day, Kevin N. Roulhac(1754) defeated National Master Barry Davis(2204), and James J Paul,MD(1487) defeated Daniel Allen(1960) in the MLK Open section and U1500 Co Champions Samuel Santora(1305) and Peter Killinger(1067) upset Top seeded Benjamin Rummell(1469) in the William J O'Leary U1500 section. Corey Spencer(630) upset grandfather Kevin Vincent(1080)for the family bragging rights in the last game of the tournament.

Results in the Presidential Scholastic K-12 Section, 12 scholastic players, 6 females, four chess teams from Urban Queens and Knights Chess Club, Enterprise Charter, Niagara Falls Chess Club and The George K Arthur Shiller Park Chess Club.

Results were Presidential K-3 Section was Champion Ashton A. William and 2nd Place - Alexis J. Schlaak. In the 4th - 6th section was Champion Brandon Laury and 2nd Place was Jessica Dixon. In the Presidential K-12 section, Undefeated Champion and TOP Female - Dekayla Dubose, daughter of Douglas Dubose(rated Chess Expert)and 2nd Place was Shaka E. Davis, son of Lionel L. Davis(National Master) and 3rd Place - Aaron Cooper, Boyscouts of America.

In the Martin Luther King Jr. Open Section, had 12 total paid players crowned Undefeated Champion - National Master - Lionel L. Davis(2255) and 2nd Place Tie was awarded to Kevin N. Roulhac(1754) and Erik W. Lubas(1938) both scholastic seniors in high school players and 4th Place - National Master Barry Davis(2204).

I'm afraid I'm unable to play tomorrow, and in general I've been time-sinked by this. Also this for a summary. But Happy New Year, everyone.

William O'Leary-Soudant Memorial Classic 2013

Hosted by the O'LEARY - SOUDANT Family in loving memory of William J O'Leary, grandfather to Ruby Soudant and the Archangel 8 Chess Academy.

If you are looking for the ultimate chess challenge, or simply come and play for fun, then you are invited to join the US Chess Federation members in the Buffalo - Niagara Falls, New York Chess Community in an open, friendly and respectful chess environment, free parking under the Mall, Boutique shops and Food Court open during tournament play.

This is a unique opportunity to come and compete, test your skill, knowledge and your will to win against some of the most respected and admired nationally ranked, top International Masters, National Masters and Scholastic State Champion chess players in the United States.

This is the second year of the chess classic and will be held on Saturday, Jan 19th, 2013 at the Main Place Mall, Upper Level, 390 Main Street, Buffalo, New York.

There will be 4 games, no elimination, USCF dual rated, Game 50;d5 sec., each in OPEN and U1500 sections; Scholastic Stars K-12, will play 4 games, no elimination, Game 35;d5.

PIZZA and Refreshments will be provided for all tournament players! All Chess players are to bring their own chess sets, chess boards and digital chess clock, if available.

Early bird registrations are to be mailed and made payable to The Archangel 8 Chess Academy, 60F Guilford Lane, Buffalo NY 14221 by midnight on thursday, Jan. 16th with full name, uscf number, section and telephone.

OPEN and U1500 Cash Prizes are based on 18 players in each section. Entry fee is $25 or $35 USD Cash at the door. Cash prizes for the OPEN section will be $200, $100 and $50, U1500 section will be $120, $60 and $30.

All OPEN and U1500 players must arrive by 9am, games will start at 9:30am, 11:30am, 1:15pm and 3pm.

Scholastic Stars K-12 Section players must report by 10am, Games will start at 10:30am, 11:30am, 12:30pm and 1:30pm. Trophies will be awarded to the TOP 3 players and Top Female Award along with a group photo after the last game has been completed.

Ryan Madden wins in Sardinia

  Ryan Madden scored 3.5/4 to win the Sardinia tournament last Saturday.  Madden defeated Chris Darling, Pat Patterson, and Ray Dunsworth before drawing Josh Dunsworth in round 4 to clinch 1st. Ryan's toughest game was in round 1 when although down 2 pawns, managed to checkmate Chris Darling with only 9 seconds left on his clock! 
  Pat Patterson, Josh Dunsworth and Chris Darling (1304 rating!), who had a fine tournament, tied for 2nd with 3 /4.  Max Peters and Chris Dunsworth tied for the u1300 prize.  Also competing were Zach Madden, Sam Santora, Austin Kossow, Ryan and Nathan Palmisano.
  Sam Santora won the rated scholastic section, beating out Max Peters, Jeffrey Schalberg, Keegan Kempf, and Daved Stefan.
  Matt Schantz won the unrated section over Ethen Warner, Megan Hazeltine, Brayden Petri, Caden Bookmiller, Frank Ras, and Garrett Rumfola.
  Many thanks to the Dunsworth family for traveling 2 hrs from Erie,Pa to join us.
