An example of what I mean by "Vision of the Board" from this week's play in the Morelia-Linares super-tournament: Set up this position from move 79 of Carlsen-Shirov, White to play.
ReplyDeleteWhite: King c8, Rook c5, Knight d8, pawn b7
Black: King f6, Rook b1, Bishop h2.
A basic fact here is that Rook+Knight vs Rook is generally drawn when the defender's King has room in the center. So winning Black's Bishop for the b-pawn is not enough.
Carlsen played 79.Rc6+. Of the five legal moves for Black's King, what is the one square you must not step on? Well, poor Shirov did, and resigned on the next move! The whole game is here.
This is great. If only I was still back in ub, I would have attended. Now at work, but will try and make to Dr.Regan's lectures.
