Douglas Dubose and NM Eddie Mark III shake hands before the start of the final round game. This scene was repeated a dozen or so moves later when they agreed to what they called a "grandmaster draw."

  1. Not much fight in last game, but both of them had to play fighting chess in prevous rounds. Congratulations to both.

  2. ...but there is a question? Who is the "Chess Champion of Buffalo"? On S. Polgar blog we read:
"Anyone is permitted to play in the 1st Annual Mayor's Cup of Buffalo as it is a USCF rated Grand Prix tournament. However, the title of "Chess Champion of Buffalo" along with the Mayor's Cup will be awarded to the player from Western New York who has the highest score in the Open section."
    So who is it?

  3. I looked and Eddie Mark is not really from Florida, but from around here. He just played in his last tournament in Miami, Fla.

  4. Dubose had not achieved any real advantage as white and had already spent about 45 minutes of his time. I had only spent about ten minutes to that point.
Under the circumstances I think it was probably a good idea for him to agree to a draw, especially since a loss would have left him with nothing.
